Nourishment through sound – seasonal musings, music, and meditation

Happy fall season!
There’s a slight chill in the air, and a ‘mushroomy’ scent as we enter the Autumn season. Trees proudly display their fall hues of golden, bronze, and scarlet. Squirrels are busily collecting walnuts from my neighbors’ tree, planting them in my flowerbeds. Chickadees, Juncos and Nuthatches bring their families to my yard to gather food to store during the lean winter months to come. In my vegetable garden, I’m harvesting a bumper crop of spaghetti squash, zucchini, kale and collards.
Nourishment of your soul
I hope this newsletter finds you having discovered ways to maintain balance and optimism during these tremendously challenging times. Our nervous system was not designed to endure the constant bombardment of discord – it’s built to ‘sprint’ from acute danger. We are called to get creative to find new ways to de-stress.
I encourage you to take time out to nourish your soul. This may be through building community – meeting regularly with kindred spirits. Or taking an “introvert’s time-out” to restore alone. You might want to decide to take particular action to make the world a better place. Regularly communing with Nature is fabulously restorative.
Music
Music helps me shift my focus – and I find that global musical “mashups” and harmony remind me of what we share in common. I recently returned from a trip to Memphis (Elvis Presley’s Graceland, Sun Studio, Beale Street) and Nashville (Honky Tonk Highway, Country Music Hall of Fame Museum, Grand Ole Opry), immersing myself in music history and appreciation. I learned about the storytelling of country music, the hope of new up and coming stars cutting records at Sun Studio, and the history of Rockabilly, Blues, Country, and Rock and Roll. I highly recommend accessing music that feeds your soul, and supporting independent music stations and performers.
A gift of a guided rainbow breathing meditation
Speaking of recordings, I’ve enclosed an Autumn gift for you in this newsletter -- is a recording of my guided “Rainbow meditation”, at the request of clients and friends. It focuses on body, breath, and colors, and helps to ‘cancel out’ our internal chatter of worry and self-criticism. I’ve created it over time with clients, and find that it provides relaxation, and a moment’s peace. I invite you to practice it daily, to restore concentration and relaxation. It’s about eight minutes long. Enjoy!
